Remco Evenepoel has become the Olympic champion in the road race after a smart attack on a climb with 38 kilometers to go, soloing to the finish line and becoming the first Belgian to win the race since 2000. Mathieu van der Poel attempted to attack but could not distance himself from the chasing group, ultimately finishing 12th.
