Beune knocks off home favorite Wiklund and takes gold in 3,000 meters at World Distance Championships
Dutch speed skater Joy Beune captured the gold medal in the 3,000 meters at the World Distances Championships in Hamar, with a strong race and a narrow lead over Martina Sáblíková of the Czech Republic. Beune thus succeeds Irene Schouten as world champion and has two more chances at gold in the team pursuit and the 1,500 meters.
